Abstract

Ruiz and Baer (1997) understand behavioral cusps as a special kind of behavioral change, one that is “crucial to what comes next.” We would like to think that change is usually for the “best”, and yet we often lose sight of who defines “best”. In their seminal article, Baer, Wolf, and Risley (1968) have called attention to dimensions that need to be considered in the design of behavioral change programs - one of these dimensions being social validity. The concept of social validity invites us to consider a perspective other than just the program designer’s. This conference’s theme is “ABA for a Better World”, and this talk will discuss “curiosity” as a behavioral class that can support behavior analysts in promoting change for the better. We argue that the class of behaviors under this label can serve as a behavioral cusp which will lead to the promotion of behavioral change that is socially valid and leads to improvements in quality of life, and thus a better world.
